‘BACK TO PICTURA’
Nature and Figure IMPRESSIONS by the Groninger artist
In the major art venue of the Northern Netherlands ‘Pictura’ where most famous Dutch artists exhibited their work is an overview of the work of the Groninger artist Edzard Koning. Pictura is situated in a 17th century townhouse adjacent to the famous Martinitower and the Grote Markt. A visit to this exhibition takes you to nostalgic encounters with the early 20th century villages and landscapes of the Netherlands, dreamlike images of nature and trips to Paris and Spain. Children and animals play an important role in his work.
Following an inspiring youth in the province of Groningen and as a student at The Hague Art Academy, the young Edzard Koning was influenced by the many art movements in the Netherlands during the turn of the 19th century. He himself named his style of work: ‘dreamy impressionism’. As well as an artist, he is renowned for his illustrations of Van Eeden’s ‘De Kleine Johannes’ (1898) and the ‘Verkade Albums’ (1914-1918).
During his lifetime he was a well known and well loved artist who regularly exhibited his work. There are collections of Edzard’s work in all the major art museums of the Netherlands. Now he is back in Groningen with a wide selection of his oeuvre from the family collection. Some of the exhibited works are for sale.
